In a cornfield leveled by the ravages of battle, a colonel directs the fire of his regiment of tarheels. The motto "First, Furthest and Last" refers to the North Carlina troops throughout the course of the war. They fought at the first land battle of the Civil War at the Battle of Big Bethel, Virginia on June 10, 1861. They were also engaged in the ill-fated Battle of Gettysburg, which was the South's furthest penetration into the Union line. Finally, they were the last troops to surrender at Appomattox.
