One of the most distinctive memorials on the Gettysburg Battlefield, the Irish Brigade Monument honors three New York Regiments- the 63rd, 69th and 88th New York, which gallantly fought in the area that has come to be known as "The Loop". Dedicated on July 2, 1888 on the 25th anniversary of their fight in the Wheatfield, the three regiments had combined their state appropriations to erect the bronze and granite monument which depicts a Celtic Cross, and a life sized Irish Wolf Hound, representing faith and devotion. The Irish Brigade Monument was designed by John H. Duncan and sculpted by Rudolph O'Donovan, and cost $5,000.00.
