Of the forty plus Federal units composed primarily of Irishmen, the most famous was the Irish Brigade. Born from the 69th New York, the Brigade was raised by Thomas Francis Meager and grew to include other New York, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts regiments. The Irish Brigade was almost always the vanguard in many decisive battles including Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg.
