This new printing of A Woman's War Record (originally published in 1889) recounts Mrs. Septima Collis's experiences in Union army camps throughout the American Civil War. Her husband, Charles H.T. Collis, was founder and captain of the "Zouaves d'Afrique," an independent Philadephia infantry company, Colonel of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry regiment, and later a Brigadier General. Septima was originally from Charlestown, South Carolina, and she struggled with her feelings, as her brother, and numerous friends and family members served in the Confederate forces.
Mrs. Collis joined her husband's regiment in the field numerous times from 1861-1865. She describes a vivid picture of camp life, and the civilian side of things, which was quite different from that experienced by the enlisted men. Mrs. Collis also spent much time in Washinton D.C., and met President Abraham Lincoln. She and her husband were very impressed by their interactions with the President, and General Collis' essay, "Lincoln's Magnanimity", is included at the closing of this work, along with numerous photos of the regiment and the officers Mrs. Collis spent so much time with in the field.
