The United States Navy at the outbreak of the Civil War was ill prepared to mount a serious campaign on the water, with many ships out of commission, uncompleted or out of date. There were only 7,600 sailors in uniform.
The Confederate Navy, on the other hand, simply did not exist. They faced the monumental task of building the necessary ships and recruiting the men needed to man the vessels.
The Confederate sailor was the subject on Francis Barnum's 1995 Event sculpture, entitled Seaman, CSS Alabama. Holding a swab, he mans one of the guns on the notorious Southern raider.
